Well, being a huge fan of the Alien movies, I was quite excited for this movie. I can still remember watching Predator 2 and seeing the Alien skull on the ship and knowing that something would come out of that.
That being said, I was pretty disappointed in AVP. The Predators were pretty cool, and the Aliens were their usual zenomorph selves... but the rest of the movie was seriously lacking... Here's a quick rundown:
1. The human characters were pretty boring, although it was cool to see Bishop's origins. With actors, you usually get what you pay for...
2. The movie was set in 2004. Ridley Scott created an awesome universe in the first Alien movie, which was carried on throughout the series. The game AVP takes place in that time period. A scenario involving the Predators, Aliens, and a group of Space Marines would have been far better than a group of scientists in the present day.
3. Not enough Alien v Predator fight scenes... that is the title of the movie after all.
4. Since the movie is set before the Alien series...more prequel type material could have been included...Obviously, the Company becomes interested in the Alien at this point...why not exploit that a bit more...
5. The bullet camera effect was great in the FIRST Matrix movie...there is no need for it to be in every subsequent action movie... Face-Huggers in bullet time...not neccesary.
Bottom Line: I saw a matinee of the movie and it was packed. The buzz is that if the movie generates enough income, they are going to make another Alien movie, following the Ripley storyline. And, the rumor is that James Cameron(Aliens director) will write and direct... So, despite its weaknesses, I wish it well at the Box Office.
