Hi Guys,
Tommygunz sent me. He told me someone may be able to help me with a problem. Since my computer had been reformatted I have been having trouble putting games in. Sometimes it seems to download the game completely and when I try to play it a cannot read exe error comes up. Sometimes it cant read the cd at all. If it is a driver - how do I check to see if I have that driver and if its installed correctly? or if some checkbox was left unchecked? I'm not a computer wiz so, if anyone has any ideas please use sublaymans terms lol. I would appreciate any help you can give. Thanks Nick

I'm thinking that your reinstall disk should have the various drivers needed to get all the hardware back up & running. PLace the disk in the tray, and if it does not autorun- you should be able to start it in "my computer"

Sounds like an optical drive problem. Have tried using another CD/DVD drive maybe borrowing one from someone. Also some games are known not to like CD/DVD burners. Another possiblity could be a loose IDE cable or the CD/DVD drive not set to slave or master correctly. I remember using a pre release version of Vista that didnt like a DVD rom drive and once I replaced it with another it was fine.

thanks konkussion and speedfellow - kunkussion - as far as the install disk goes - all I have is the original XP cd - would that work? speedfellow - as far as the drives go ( hardwarewise ) I think I remember switching my dvd with my cd rom spots. My cd-rw is my E drive and my dvd player is my D drive - will that make a difference? and if it does - how do I change it? thanks again

Are your two cd/DVD drives on the the same IDE cable ? IDE CABLE If so check at the back and make sure one drive is set to 'Master' and the other set to 'Slave' NOTE.. not all drives are the same this is a sample picture the right setting should be on the drive somewhere Did you swap drives after you installed XP or before Check for damaged or loose cables. It could just be a bad drive, I tore my hair out one night thinking it was a bad disk. Hope this is layman enough for you ;D

I swapped the drives after I installed xp. What I want to try first is to swap them back - I dont know how to do that. How do I get my CD-RW back to D and my DVD on drive E. Whats funny is my game Deer Hunter 4 was put back in just fine. All other games either somewhat downloaded and wont play or the CD couldnt be read. No internal parts were messed with.

Ok heres what you need to do.
Click Start Click control panel DoubleClick Administrative Tools DoubleClick Computer Management Click on Storage in left window DoubleClick on Disk Management in the right window Then if you right click on the drive you want you should be able to change the drive letter. CAUTION !!! be very careful to pick the correct drive !!

Thanks speed. Your instuctions worked like a charm and I got them swapped. It didnt fix the cd problem but it did knock out a possibility. maybe I should just reformat and start over.

Hi! have you updated XP after the reformat? and your video card drivers?? It could be a "Direct X" conflict. Game updates have fixes for such conflicts as well.... TommyG!? that is a very disturbing animation Sir... We may need to increase his beer ration?

Thanks all for the ideas. This is what fixed it. One of the reasons was a bad dvd drive like you said speed. There also was 389 errors in my registry. I downloaded Wise registry cleaner 3 and the Revo uninstaller 1.71 from download.com. Although these programs said they fixed the registry - the errors were'nt fixed. He also said I didnt have Framework 2.0 . I have no idea what that is but I have it now. Anyway, you all deserve a beer. Thanks again
